🌿 Am I Overreacting...

A gentle pause for parents of adult children

There’s a moment many parents know well…

You finish a conversation with your adult child, and something feels off.

Maybe it was their tone.
Maybe it was what they said… or didn’t say.
Maybe it was a decision you don’t understand.

And suddenly, your emotions feel bigger than the moment itself.

On the outside, it may have looked like a small interaction.

But on the inside?

It felt heavy.
It lingered.
And now you’re asking yourself:

👉 “Why did that bother me so much?”
👉 “Am I overreacting?”

🌸 You’re Not Overreacting

Before we go any further, let’s gently clear something up:

You are not “too much.”
You are not “too sensitive.”
And you are not failing as a parent.

What you’re feeling is real.

But often… it’s not just about the moment.

It’s about what the moment touched inside of you.

🔍 It’s Not Just What Happened — It’s What It Touched

When your child says something sharp…
When they make a choice you don’t agree with…
When they ask for help (again)…

Your reaction isn’t just about that situation.

It’s often connected to something deeper:

  • a fear about their future
  • a longing to feel respected
  • a sense of responsibility you’ve been carrying
  • a quiet belief that “I should be doing more”
  • or even something from your own past

So when you ask, “Why did that hit me so hard?”…

That question is actually pointing you in the right direction.

💭 A Gentle Way to Pause (Instead of Spiraling)

The next time you feel that surge of emotion, try this:

Not to fix it.
Not to shut it down.
Just to understand it.

Ask yourself:

1. What actually happened?

Stick to the facts — not the story your mind is building around it.

2. What am I feeling?

Name it honestly:

  • hurt
  • fear
  • frustration
  • sadness
  • anger

3. What did this touch in me?

This is the most important question.

Did it trigger:

  • fear for their future?
  • a need to feel heard or respected?
  • a sense of responsibility for their choices?

4. What am I trying to do right now?

Fix it?
Explain?
Control the outcome?
Withdraw?

Just notice.

No judgment.

✋ The Moment Everything Starts to Shift

Here’s where things begin to change:

When you realize…

👉 You are not reacting to just the moment
👉 You are responding from what’s happening inside of you

And once you can see that…

You have space.

Space to pause.
Space to choose differently.
Space to respond instead of react.

🌿 A Different Way Forward

You may not be able to change your child.

But you can begin to change how you show up.

Instead of reacting from emotion, you can gently ask:

👉 “What would a calm response look like here?”

Sometimes that means saying less.
Sometimes that means pausing.
Sometimes that means not responding right away at all.

And sometimes…

It means simply giving yourself permission to feel what you feel
without making it mean something is wrong.

✝️ A Truth to Hold Onto

“Be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry.” — James 1:19

There is wisdom in the pause.

You don’t have to respond immediately.
You don’t have to figure everything out in the moment.

🌸 Closing Thought

You are not overreacting.

You are becoming aware.

And awareness is where peace begins.

Not in fixing everything.
Not in getting the perfect response.

But in learning to pause…
to understand…
and to show up just a little more calmly than before.
